Three Key Tips for Successfully Moving an Upright Piano

Packing up a house ready for moving is a stressful exercise, and every homeowner quickly realises that some household items are easier to pack up than others. Household belongings like books are small and rectangular and are easy to pack into a box, but other items need a little more forethought before your removalist can place them on their truck. Take an upright piano as an example. This 200+ kilo item will not be packed easily, so follow these three key tips to help successfully move an upright piano to its new home.

Outer Packing Materials

The packing materials you need for the outside of the piano can be obtained from your removalists. Let them know before your moving day that you have a piano to be moved so that they have these available for you on the day. In particular, the removalist needs thick moving blankets to wrap around the outside of the piano, furniture straps to secure the blankets in place and a moving dolly to help move the piano out to the truck. If your piano has wheels on it, the dolly may not be needed. When the blankets are wrapped and secured around the outside of the piano, this protects the exterior from scratches or other damage while in the truck.

Inner Packing Materials

The piano keys of this instrument are fragile and subject to damage during the move, so these must be protected before transport time. If your piano has a lid that sits over the keys, move this into place and lock it using the key. If there is no key, secure the lid in place with packing tape. If your piano does not have a lid, find a long, thick blanket that can be laid over the keys and taped into place to protect them. The inside of the upright does not need any packing material placed within it, as putting items in there could damage the strings.

Moving Day

When moving day rolls around, the best thing you can do for your piano is stand out of the way and let the removalists get it onto the truck for you. They have moved pianos in the past and know exactly how to move it and where it is best placed on their vehicle so that no damage occurs. Since this is the task you are paying them for, let the experts carefully and seamlessly move your piano so it arrives at your new home ready to provide music for you and your family.
