Three Risks Of Moving A Bed ... And How To Avoid Them

Moving house is a tiring exercise, and at the end of the day, you desperately want to fall into bed and have a great night's sleep. However, without careful planning, the only place you will be sleeping is on the cold, hard floor! Moving the family beds takes forethought and strategy. Before moving day arrives, learn the three most common risks of relocating a bed so that you can avoid them.

Damaged Mattress

A lot of thought goes into buying the perfect mattress for your body. But, just like Goldilocks discovered, a mattress can be too hard, too soft, or just right. Therefore, it makes sense to protect the perfect mattress once you own one. An unprotected mattress may have its fabric cover ripped, stained, or dirtied whilst in transit. You can easily reduce this risk by using a mattress protector bag. This bag is made of thick plastic and slips over one end of the mattress. The bag is then pulled over the whole mattress until it covers it completely. The open bag ends are sealed with packing tape to ensure nothing falls into the bag during transportation. Ask your furniture removalist if they have mattress bags onboard. You can purchase them at your local hardware store if they do not.

Missing Hardware

When it comes time to transport the bed base that supports your mattress, dismantling is required to reduce its footprint inside the moving truck. Whether you take the bed apart or your furniture removalist does it for you, the bed base hardware is critical for reassembling it at your new home. Ask the furniture removalist to give you the hardware pieces. Place these into a plastic resealable bag and place the bag inside your handbag or any other safe place where it will not get lost. Alternatively, take the bag of hardware pieces onto part of the bed base, so the items travel together.

Broken Bed Base

Reassembling a bed base at the end of the moving day only to find broken pieces is another common risk of relocating a bed. Breakage is avoidable with proper packing by your removalist. The best chance of avoiding breakage is if you:

  1. wrap all parts of the bed in furniture blankets or bubble wrap;
  2. place the bed parts upright or on top of other furniture in the moving truck to avoid crushing.

Furniture removalists know how to move household furniture without breakage, so when you choose a reputable, experienced firm, you can look forward to falling into your comfortable bed in your new home at the end of a long moving day.
